Department of Justice Enters Lawsuit to Stop California's New Electoral Map
The US Justice Department has officially joined a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to block the California's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to federal court, challenges the map championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's electoral map represents a blatant attempt to seize control that violates voting rights and mocks the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will survive court challenges.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to significantly advantage Latino communities in contravention of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," stated a senior official from the Civil Rights Division.
Broader Implications
The legal battle constitutes the most significant response by the Democratic party in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has spread across multiple states.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed public consent, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to gain just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the majority will shape the remaining period of the sitting president's term, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its political program or encounter opposition, congressional probes and potential further challenges.
